According to the arrest report, Rebelo-Garcia and two other teenagers met with Gagne, who was selling a firearm, around 10:30 p.m. on March 30 off Chaucer Avenue near South Flores Street. The situation turned deadly when one of the suspects took the gun from Gagne, prompting him to draw a weapon. Another suspect then drew a gun and started shooting at Gagne, hitting him several times. The three suspects fled the scene, leaving Gagne lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to the stomach.

The suspect later confessed to police that he and the other two suspects had planned to steal the firearm from Gagne during the meetup.
Detectives reviewed messages between Rebelo-Garcia and Gagne over social media, which revealed that Rebelo-Garcia had arranged to buy the firearm from Gagne. Additionally, they found messages from Rebelo-Garcia to an unknown person discussing the plan to steal the firearm from Gagne. The investigators stated that the messages made Rebelo-Garcia a party to capital murder, and if it weren’t for his messages, Gagne would not have arrived at the location where the firearm was stolen and he was shot.
