Adam McAteer Obituary, A Remarkable Life Remembered

It is with heavy hearts that the staff of Michael Whitley Architects share the devastating news of the untimely passing of their esteemed colleague and partner, Adam McAteer. Tragically taken from them on December 10, 2023, in a cycling accident—a pursuit he loved dearly—Adam’s departure has left an irreplaceable void in the tight-knit architectural community.

Adam’s journey intertwined with the firm began in 2008, following years of shared adventures with Paul, his lifelong friend and fellow architect. Having studied Architecture together at Queen’s, their bond transcended professional realms. Adam’s dedication and prowess in his craft were evident as he ascended to the role of partner in 2017. The practice’s address at 66 Bloomfield Avenue will forever echo with the absence of Adam’s presence, as his professionalism, talent, work ethic, and infectious wit became integral to the identity of the firm—a family in the truest sense.

Beyond the professional sphere, Adam was the beloved husband of Ashleigh, the Accounts Manager of the firm. The staff mourns alongside Ashleigh, their children Jack, Ella, Connie, and the broader family circle, recognizing the profound loss that will be keenly felt by all who cherished Adam.

His colleagues fondly recall Adam’s unique quirks—his festive countdowns, the camaraderie expressed through matching outfits with Paul, his remarkable photography skills, tech know-how, infectious smile, and an unmistakable sparkle that brightened the workspace. The void left by his absence is immeasurable, and the staff acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead.

In honor of Adam’s life, a service of thanksgiving will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, December 16, at Whiteabbey Presbyterian Church, followed by burial in St John’s Churchyard, Ballycarry, at 3 pm. The staff invites those who wish to contribute to consider making donations in lieu of flowers to sustrans.org.uk, reflecting Adam’s passion for cycling.

As the architectural community mourns the loss of a visionary and cherished colleague, Michael Whitley Architects asks for understanding during this difficult time.

Ashleigh, David, Neil, Paul, Rebekah, and the entire firm grieve collectively, finding solace in memories and the enduring impact of Adam McAteer’s remarkable life.
