Lawrence Scott, a 61-year-old man, was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Phillips on Tuesday evening.
According to Franklin County Dispatchers, calls came in around 6 p.m. reporting a potentially suicidal individual with a gun on a bridge along Salem Road.
When police arrived, they located Scott on the bridge’s side, and a deputy attempted to engage with him, offering support and urging him to put down the weapon.
Despite the deputy’s repeated requests, Scott reportedly refused and then raised the gun in the deputy’s direction, prompting the officer to fire.
Although first aid was administered, Scott succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse Clement was placed on administrative leave as per department policy.
The case is now under investigation by the Office of the Attorney General to examine the events that led to this outcome.
The investigation will likely review the deputy’s use of force and whether it was justified given the circumstances.
