Col. Edward Thomas Ryan Obituary, Death: Beloved Albany, New York Resident and Decorated Veteran Passes Away

A sorrowful loss has befallen the community of Albany, New York, with the passing of Col. Edward Thomas Ryan, a beloved resident, decorated veteran, and devoted member of various organizations. He departed this life in accordance with his wishes, registering in Albany Medical College’s Anatomical Gift Program, with his ashes to be returned and laid to rest in Kinderhook, New York, following cremation.

Col. Ryan is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Linda Sargent, Dennis Williams, Theresa Beach, George Williams, Warren Williams, Sharon Ryan, Kelly Blue, Joseph Ryan, Mary Jane Brozowski, Judith Leto, Daniel Dominski, Michael Dominski, Cathy Stammel, and Cornelius Ryan. He was a member of St. John’s Church in Rensselaer and a retired firefighter from Rensselaer, New York. He was also one of the founders and owners of WHRL-FM radio station in Albany, New York, and worked as a chef at American Legion Post #1231 in East Greenbush.

Throughout his life, Col. Ryan was dedicated to serving his country and community. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars POST # 7378, a member of the BPOE and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in East Greenbush, New York, a past commander of Melvin Roads POST 1231, the American Legion in East Greenbush, New York, and a past grand knight of the Rensselaer Knights of Columbus. He also served as the past chairman of the Vietnam Veterans/Agent Orange Committee for the American Legion in the New York State.

Col. Ryan’s military career was marked by numerous honors, decorations, and commendations, including the Defense of Liberty Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Conspicuous Service Medal, and the Commanders Citation. His loyalty, diligence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the State of New York.

In a heartfelt message, Col. Ryan shared his personal story, revealing his life-long journey as a gay man, including his 25-year loving relationship with Paul Cavagnaro, who passed away in 1994 due to a mishandled medical procedure.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial services, and the funeral will be private for the family only. Col. Ryan’s legacy will be cherished by his family, friends, and the community, remembering his loyalty, diligence, and devotion to duty, as well as his love and commitment to those closest to him.
