Local medical facilities received the 40 injured individuals for treatment.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a tragic accident occurred in Marion County Tuesday morning, resulting in the loss of eight lives and the hospitalization of 40 individuals.
The incident involved a 2010 International Bus transporting approximately 53 farm workers colliding with a Ford truck.
Troopers stated that, for reasons yet to be determined, the two vehicles collided in a sideswiped manner.
Following the collision, the bus veered off the road, crashing through a fence and overturning. The incident took place on SR-40, approximately 500 feet west of SW 148 Court.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced the closure of West Highway 40 between S.W. 180th Avenue and S.W. 140th Avenue due to the crash.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, this section of the road will remain closed for an extended duration.
