A man believed to have fled the scene after discharging multiple gunshots at an Amazon fulfillment center on Sunday has passed away following a confrontation with Columbus police shortly thereafter.
The incident at Amazon occurred at the facility located in the 6400 block of State Route 29 Northeast in West Jefferson around 4:45 p.m.
By the time officers from various agencies arrived, the man, who was an employee at the facility, had already departed and was evading capture.
Approximately 90 minutes later, the individual, who remains unidentified, was found by officers in the vicinity of Georgesville and Clime roads.
A Columbus police dispatcher informed Channel3 NOW that the individual discharged at least one round, which hit a CPD officer.
The dispatcher also relayed that around 6:50 p.m., the suspected Amazon shooter was in critical condition at Doctors West Hospital, and approximately 10 minutes later, it was confirmed that the individual had passed away.
The dispatcher was unable to verify whether the individual had been shot by an officer. The officer who was hit was in stable condition at Grant Medical Center.
No injuries were reported at Amazon; however, West Jefferson Police Chief Brandon Smith mentioned around 6:25 p.m. that “there were bullet holes on the front entry and the glass.”
“(The shooter) didn’t proceed beyond the front area of the building,” Smith stated. Numerous agencies responded to the incident and upon arrival, witnessed employees already being evacuated.
