The bodies of two individuals from Northern California were discovered after they disappeared while climbing Mount Whitney in California earlier this week.

Patricia Bolan, 29, from Davis, and Andrew Niziol, 28, from South Lake Tahoe, were identified by the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office. They were reported missing at around 8:30 p.m.

on Tuesday after failing to return from their planned ski and snowboard trip from Mount Whitney’s “notch” to Upper Boy Scout Lake, where they had set up camp.

The individual who reported them missing had been hiking with Bolan and Niziol and waited for several hours at the campsite for their arrival, according to authorities. Bolan, who graduated from UC Davis with a Ph.D. in Physics at the end of the Winter 2024 term, was confirmed by the university.

The Inyo County Search and Rescue team helped in locating the deceased climbers. Mount Whitney, situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains, is the highest peak in the contiguous United States, reaching an elevation of 14,505 feet.
