Camay De Silva Obituary, Death: Destry Jones and Damien Hinson Arrested and Charged with Murder and Shooting to Death of 18-Year-Old Camay De Silva at Delaware State University;

Tragedy struck the campus of Delaware State University on April 21 when 18-year-old Camay De Silva was shot and killed during a fight between two groups of men. Two suspects, Destry Jones, 20, and Damien Hinson, 18, both of Dover, have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with De Silva’s death.

According to Dover police, Jones and Hinson were not students at Delaware State University and had no connection to the school. They were identified as suspects after a thorough investigation, which included reviewing surveillance footage and conducting interviews with witnesses.

Camay De Silva was visiting the campus when she was caught in the crossfire of a fight between two groups of men. She was shot in the head and rushed to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Her family described her as a bright and promising young woman who was studying computer science at Delaware Technical Community College and was in the process of transferring to Delaware State University.

During a news conference on Monday morning, Dover police announced the arrests of Jones and Hinson, who are also charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of two other men during the same fight. Jones was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Brooklyn, New York, while Hinson was arrested in Dover.

Camay’s mother, Shanelle De Silva, was present at the news conference and spoke emotionally about the loss of her daughter. “They took someone who had nothing to do with what was going on with them. And their senseless choices affected a whole lot of people,” she said, addressing the suspects. “I hope you can live with what you did, and that guilt eats you up.”

De Silva’s family remembered her as a kind and compassionate person who was loved by everyone who knew her. She was a high school graduate with honors and had begun college at Morgan State University before transferring to Delaware Technical Community College due to a mass shooting on campus last October.

The arrests of Jones and Hinson bring some closure to the De Silva family, but they still grapple with the senseless loss of their beloved daughter and sister. The community is rallying around them, offering support and condolences during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Camay De Silva. Your memory will live on through the countless lives you touched, and your family and community will continue to fight for justice in your name. Your bright light was extinguished too soon, but it will never be forgotten.
