A devastating accident occurred late Friday night in Wayne City, resulting in the tragic death of Laura ‘Christi’ Burns, the 53-year-old owner of Christi’s Little Red Barn Restaurant. The collision involved two side-by-side vehicles and left three others injured, with the community now mourning the loss of a cherished member.
According to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse, the accident happened around 11:45 p.m. on Rock Crusher Road, southwest of Dix. Laura ‘Christi’ Burns was a passenger in one of the side-by-sides and was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained from being ejected from the vehicle.
The drivers of both side-by-sides were trapped and required assistance from the Jefferson Fire Department. They were airlifted to St. Louis hospitals for medical treatment. The passenger in the second vehicle self-extricated and was taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon before being transported to a St. Louis hospital by medical helicopter.
The identities of the passengers have not been released. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the collision with the assistance of an Accident Reconstructionist from the Illinois State Police.
