A hit-and-run crash in Dumfries resulted in the death of a motorcycle driver on Wednesday night, prompting an investigation into the incident. The Prince William County Police Department promptly responded to the scene at Richmond Highway and Pine Bluff Drive following a report of a motorcycle collision.
After conducting an investigation, authorities determined that the driver of a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400R was traveling at a high speed southbound on Richmond Highway, approaching Pine Bluff Drive.
Simultaneously, a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck was heading northbound on Richmond Highway and entered the intersection, crossing the motorcycle’s path. The collision between the truck and motorcycle caused the rider to be thrown off the bike.
The motorcycle driver, identified as 20-year-old Joseph Word from Dumfries, was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, Word succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene of the crash before the arrival of the police. However, the abandoned truck was later discovered behind a nearby business. Despite efforts by a police K-9 unit to locate the suspect, they were unsuccessful in finding them.
The investigation into this case is currently active and ongoing. The Crash Investigation Unit is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or possesses information about those involved to come forward and contact the police.
