A devastating tragedy has shaken the community of Middletown, Kentucky, as 65-year-old John McQuillen, a retired Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy, was found shot and killed on March 12, 2025. The investigation, led by the Louisville Metro Police Department, has yielded several key developments, including the arrest of Brandon McQuillen, John’s 43-year-old son.

*Discovery of the Crime Scene*

John McQuillen’s lifeless body was discovered outside in the 1200 block of Winter Springs Court around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Emergency responders rushed him to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. McQuillen had dedicated 10.5 years of service to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office before retiring in July 2021.

*Investigation and Arrest*

During the investigation, authorities uncovered a suspicious package near the crime scene, which was safely detonated by the Louisville Metro Police Department’s bomb squad. A vehicle linked to the case was also located, thanks to public assistance. Multiple individuals have been interviewed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

In a significant development, Brandon McQuillen was arrested at 11 a.m. on Thursday, found in the area of the homicide investigation and reportedly violating an emergency protective order (EPO). He was also in possession of an AR-15 rifle, leading to charges for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and violating an EPO/DVO.

Although police have not officially linked Brandon McQuillen to the murder, court records confirm that he is John McQuillen’s son. Brandon McQuillen’s criminal history is also noteworthy, with a 2020 arrest for a violent crime committed in 2019. He allegedly chained a woman inside a home against her will, subjecting her to physical abuse. Originally charged with kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and other offenses, most charges were reduced in a plea deal, and he was sentenced to three years in prison.
