Joseph Horan V, a 32-year-old man, was fatally shot by a Colleton County deputy on Tuesday night. The incident occurred in a parking lot along Sniders Highway, near a Best Western hotel and Ruby Tuesday restaurant.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Walterboro police and Colleton County deputies responded to reports of a disturbance in the area.

Upon arrival, deputies found Horan damaging vehicles by slashing tires and breaking windows. One of the deputies confronted Horan and instructed him to drop a knife he was holding. However, Horan allegedly refused and moved to attack the deputy, prompting the officer to discharge their firearm.
