Yakov Shapiro’s obituary, death,:Sudden Passing A Tremendous Loss for Columbia/Barnard Hillel

The community of Columbia/Barnard Hillel is mourning the sudden loss of Yakov Shapiro, a dedicated teacher who left an indelible mark on the lives of those he touched. Yakov, fondly known as Yasha, served as the Jewish Agency Israel Fellow from 2021 to 2024 and had been teaching Hebrew at a nearby school in New York City since June. His warm smile, gentle eyes, and heartfelt greetings made him a beloved figure, and his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the community.

Yakov’s dedication to his work was evident in the way he connected with students, engaging them in informal coffee discussions on campus and fostering meaningful relationships. He was deeply committed to his role and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with such a remarkable community. Beyond his work at Columbia/Barnard Hillel, Yakov was passionate about giving back to the global Jewish community. He volunteered at a Jewish camp in Cherkasy, Ukraine, and was actively involved in supporting those affected by the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Yakov’s kindness and compassion knew no bounds. He traveled with the Jewish Agency to the Polish border, providing aid to arriving immigrants and offering High Holiday prayer books in Russian to help the community during the holidays. His love for running was evident in his bold completion of the 2023 NYC Marathon. Living in New York City, Yakov embraced the diversity of the community, reveling in the opportunity to sample various cuisines and build connections throughout the city.

As the community grapples with this tremendous loss, the Hillel professional team is available to offer support and comfort. Team members will be present on the third floor of the Kraft Centre until 6 p.m. today, providing a safe space for individuals to share memories, seek solace, or simply talk. Additional opportunities for gathering will be announced following Rosh Hashanah. Resources, including CPS and Furman, remain available for those in need.

Yakov Shapiro’s passing is a profound loss, and his absence will be deeply felt. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire and uplift, a testament to the indelible mark he left on the lives of those he touched. May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in peace.
