Melissa Powers Obituary, Death

An Albuquerque man has been charged in connection with the fatal collision of a woman with his pickup truck earlier this month.

Jorge Ceniceros, 19, faces charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Court documents indicate that Ceniceros was arrested on Monday, but no additional details were provided.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, on September 8, Ceniceros admitted to striking a female pedestrian with his vehicle.

The incident occurred a few days earlier, on September 5, when Albuquerque Police responded to a hit-and-run call in the 500 block of San Pablo, near Trumbull. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Melissa Powers. Her boyfriend informed police that they were walking west on Trumbull when a speeding vehicle struck Powers.

On September 8, Ceniceros contacted police, admitting that he had been drinking on the night of the hit-and-run and expressed his desire to turn himself in.

However, the complaint states that after hanging up the phone, Ceniceros told officers he was at his mobile home office, where his parents were trying to prevent him from surrendering. By the time police arrived, he had left the scene.
