Elizabeth Ella (Burich) Velez, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the age of 76. She was the loving wife of Antonio G. Velez, with whom she shared over 54 years of marriage. Born on May 20, 1948, in The Bronx, New York, Elizabeth was the daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Evans) Burich.
Elizabeth’s life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community. She was a devoted member of the St. Francis of Assisi Church and actively involved in her community, volunteering for various local and regional organizations. Her passion for hockey was ignited in her youth by her father, and she was deeply committed to supporting her children and grandchildren in the sport.
Elizabeth’s professional career was marked by dedication and excellence. She started in advertising while living in New York and later transitioned into the insurance industry, where she worked for Heublein Beverage Co. and eventually retired from The Travelers Insurance Co. in December 2023 after many years of dedicated service.
Above all, Elizabeth treasured her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who found her greatest joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her kindness, caring nature, and unwavering support will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband, Tony; her children, Jeanne-Marie Russo and her husband Christopher of South Windsor, Michael A. Velez and his wife Catherine of The Bronx, New York, and Gloria Carleton and her husband Shawn of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts; her beloved grandchildren, John, Dominic, Maddox, Tucker, Eloise, Lola, Graycen, Winslow, and Isla; her sisters, Janice Rhiel and her husband Gary of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Lauren Divet and her husband Jeffrey of North Ft. Myers, Florida; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William and Terry Velez of University Park, Florida, and James and Ann Velez of Port St. Lucie, Florida. She was predeceased by her sister Manda Burich.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 12, 2024, from 4-7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 10 a.m., directly at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 673 Ellington Rd., South Windsor. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Holy Cross Cemetery in Glastonbury.
