James Barnwell, a devoted pastor of Transformation Christian Church, passed away on Saturday, July 27, at the age of 41. His life was a testament to the power of faith and the influence of God. Growing up as a “PK” (Pastor’s Kid), James acquired a deep understanding of the local church and its workings. He discovered his musical talent at a young age and began playing the percussion, which eventually led to a passion for the Hammond organ. This marked the beginning of his calling, and ministry became more than just an obligation.
James’ journey into ministry began when he was just 19 years old. He delivered his first sermon in August 2001 and was ordained at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church of Hollis in 2003. He went on to pursue a dual focus in English and Religion and Philosophy at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Despite having no acquaintances or family in the area, James felt a strong calling to establish a ministry from the ground up.
Over the years, James performed music for numerous churches, but he knew that preaching was his true vocation. He felt compelled to build a ministry from scratch, and in the spring of 2009, God granted him permission to establish a ministry in Raleigh, North Carolina. With the help of three founding members, Transformation Christian Church was born on June 5, 2009. The ministry started as a small bible study group but grew exponentially over the years, with Sunday worship attendance reaching over 300 people.
James’ passing has left a void in the lives of his congregation and the community. His legacy, however, will live on through the countless lives he touched and the ministry he built. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Transformation Christian Church, located at 1500 Garner Rd, Raleigh, NC 27610.
As we mourn the loss of Pastor James Barnwell, we take comfort in the knowledge that his life was a testament to the power of faith and the influence of God. His legacy will continue to inspire and motivate others to pursue their calling, just as he did. Rest in peace, Pastor James Barnwell. Your life, though cut short, was a blessing to many, and your memory will live on in our hearts.
