Roger Byron, 52, of Gardner, and Paul Sliwinski, 69, of Auburn, tragically lost their lives in a multi-vehicle accident in Royalston on July 16. The accident took place on Athol Road, and the cause remains under investigation by the Royalston Police, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County DA’s Office.
Police Chief Curtis Deveneau reported that the collision occurred at 2:22 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16. One vehicle was traveling south on Athol Road with only the driver inside, while a second vehicle was heading north with a driver and two passengers, Byron and Sliwinski.
Deveneau explained that the driver of the northbound vehicle lost control at some point, hitting a utility pole, a guardrail, and then the southbound vehicle near the intersection of Athol and Doane Hill roads. One person was partially ejected from the northbound vehicle and collided with the other vehicle.
Emergency services had to extricate two individuals, and three victims were taken to Athol Hospital. Sadly, both passengers in the northbound vehicle lost their lives, one at the scene and the other at the hospital.
