Virginia Licata, 86, from Blackwood, New Jersey, and Norma Matthews, 81, from Lowell, Massachusetts, tragically lost their lives in a devastating two-vehicle collision on Wednesday in Charles County, Maryland. The incident occurred at the intersection of Route 301 and Popes Creek Road in Faulkner, Maryland, just before 1:45 p.m.

Troopers from the La Plata Barrack arrived at the scene following reports of a crash, where they found Matthews declared deceased at the scene by emergency medical services. Licata was airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to Capital Region Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Initial findings suggest that Matthews was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry on Popes Creek Road, attempting to cross southbound Route 301 with Licata as a passenger. A 2017 Chevy Sonic traveling south on Route 301 collided with the driver’s side of the Toyota. The sole occupant of the Chevy, Caitlynn Connell, 28, from King George, Virginia, was also airlifted by Maryland State Police helicopter to Capital Region Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration provided assistance with road closures, which remained in effect for several hours. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is spearheading the investigation, and anyone with information regarding the crash is urged to contact Sergeant Zimmerman at 301-392-1231.
