Malcolm Brian Woo Tragedy: CAMOC Mourns the Loss of Cherished Member and Chinese American Icon at 79.

Malcolm Brian Woo, a revered member of the CAMOC family and a pioneering figure in the Chinese American community, peacefully passed away on July 8th, 2024, at the age of 79. His life will be celebrated at Malec & Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 17th, with visitation hours from 2-8 pm, followed by a service starting at 6:30 pm.

Malcolm was deeply woven into the fabric of CAMOC, having served on the board since the museum’s early days. His commitment to preserving and promoting Chinese American culture was unwavering. In 2012, Malcolm was honored with the Appreciation Award for his dedicated stewardship of the museum and his tireless service as a board member.

Malcolm’s professional journey was marked by pioneering achievements. He made history as the first Chinese American officer to retire from the Chicago Police Department after nearly three decades of exemplary service. Malcolm co-founded the Asian American Law Enforcement Association (AALEA), advocating passionately for diversity and inclusion within law enforcement.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Malcolm found immense joy in his family life. He shared his passions for music, cars, and travels to Las Vegas with his beloved wife, Tina, and cherished children Melissa (Ricardo) and Bradley. His grandchildren, Naima and Izel, brought him immeasurable pride and happiness. Malcolm is also survived by his siblings Greg, Sharon, and Roland, who stood by his side throughout his remarkable journey.

Malcolm Brian Woo leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service that touched countless lives within the CAMOC community and beyond. His memory will forever inspire us to uphold his values of inclusivity, cultural preservation, and familial devotion.
