Kevin Matthews, 40, a fugitive wanted for the fatal shooting of two men outside The Pint House in Knoxville, has died by suicide after being cornered by U.S. Marshals in a motel room in Jacksonville, Florida. Matthews was accused of killing Zachery Herrera, 28, and John Goosie, 41, in a shooting incident on July 2.
On July 2, Herrera, a security guard at The Pint House, and Goosie, a patron, were involved in an altercation with Matthews and another suspect, Steven Davis, 36. The altercation escalated, resulting in Matthews fatally shooting Herrera and Goosie outside the bar near Clinton Highway.
Following the incident, Davis was apprehended, but Matthews managed to evade capture for over a week. On July 11, authorities tracked him to Extended Stay America on Skinner Lake Drive in Jacksonville, Florida. Despite efforts to negotiate his surrender, Matthews tragically took his own life inside the motel room.
The Knoxville Police Department had identified Matthews and Davis as suspects in the double homicide. Matthews faced two counts of first-degree murder, while Davis was charged with aggravated assault and parole violation. Matthews had a history of criminal activities, including arrests for aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence, attempted theft, and other charges in Ohio and Michigan. Davis also had a lengthy arrest record dating back nearly two decades in Knox County, including multiple counts of felony theft.
