Nash McKnight, a 26-year-old man from Topeka, tragically lost his life in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 70 at the Kansas Turnpike in Douglas County early Friday morning. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred at 2:18 a.m. on Friday on the westbound side of I-70 near Big Springs, approximately 2 miles east of the Topeka Service Center on the turnpike.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash report, a 2024 Kia Optima driven by McKnight failed to stay in its lane and collided with a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Wyatt Vestal, 20, from Olathe, while both vehicles were heading west on I-70. Following the impact, the Mercury veered left and hit the concrete barrier wall separating the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70.

The Kia overturned off the road, ejecting McKnight and hitting a rock wall, according to the patrol. McKnight, who was not wearing a seat belt, was declared dead at the scene, the patrol confirmed. Next of kin were notified early Friday, as per the patrol’s crash report.
