A founding member of the Tearmann Society, Former Chair of the Board of Directors, and former staff member Judy Mae Hughes has sadly passed away. She died on May 3, 2024. She was announced dead through a social media publication that read “Judy passed away peacefully at home. Who was Judy Hughes?
Judy Mae Hughes born on March 3, 1949, was successful in many different endeavors. When she was a student at the university, she went on a trip with Crossroads International that took her to Africa and the Kalahari Desert. Her commitment to the well-being of women and the advancement of communities remained consistent throughout her whole life.

In addition to being a pioneer in the field, she played a significant role in the establishment of services for women and children, such as the establishment of the Tearmann House transition house in New Glasgow (in collaboration with Karen O’Hara and Kathy MacKay). In addition to serving as the initial coordinator for the Nova Scotia Family Violence Prevention Initiative, Judy served as the provincial coordinator for the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS).
