John Franzia Obituary, Co-founder of Bronco Wine Near Ceres, Dies, ‘True giant in the wine industry’

John Franzia and his cousins started Bronco Wine Co. in 1973, and it was a remarkable journey. They started out small, with a plant south of Ceres, California. They had no idea that Bronco Wine Co. would go on to become a major player in the California wine scene from such modest beginnings.

Their goal was to make high-quality wine more accessible and reasonably priced for a broad range of customers. Bronco Wine Co. has persistently adhered to this admirable objective over the years, making an effort to create wines of extraordinary quality at costs that are within the reach of many.

John Franzia tragically died in Modesto on March 25, as his distraught family revealed in a heartfelt press release. He passed away at the age of 84, leaving a lasting legacy in the wine business. Michael Franzia, the newly appointed chairman of the board, reflected on his father’s legacy and called John a giant in the wine industry whose quiet humility only eclipsed his profound influence. Despite his enormous contributions to the industry, John Franzia maintained a modest personality and left a lasting impression on everyone he had the honor of knowing.

John Franzia’s cousins Fred and Joseph Franzia were part of his journey with Bronco Wine Co. Together, they paved a route distinguished by ambition and creativity.

The launch of the renowned $1.99 bottles of Charles Shaw, popularly known as Two Buck Chuck, which became a mainstay at Trader Joe’s stores across the country, is one of their most noteworthy accomplishments. Furthermore, Bronco Wine Co. launched and acquired a wide range of mid-priced and premium wine labels through a series of endeavors.

While we lament John Franzia’s passing, we also honor his extraordinary life and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. Future generations will be inspired by his vision, passion, and dedication, which have left an enduring impression on the wine industry. Even though he is no longer with us, his spirit will always live on in the wines he made and the vines he cared for, which is a monument to his enduring legacy of quality and value.
