David Helms Death, David Helms Died March 21, 2024, At Aged 83

The demise of David P. Helms, the Mayor of Marion, is a sorrowful and regrettable occurrence. The data was last updated on March 21, 2024, at 1:14 p.m. Mayor David P. Helms, aged 83, died Sunday evening after a short battle with sickness. Yesterday evening marked the day of his demise. Upon his demise, his cherished spouse Sue was present to observe his departure. Mayor Helms was born in Glade Spring, Virginia in 1941. In 2014, he served as the 95th President of the Virginia Municipal League, a post he valued almost as much as his prior role as Mayor of Marion, which he held for one year.

Upon completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Emory & Henry College in 1963, Mayor Helms promptly commenced his profession as a teacher in Washington County. Over time, he specialized in instructing fifth-grade students. He eventually became the Mayor of Washington County.

In 1970, he commenced his profession as an instructor at Marion Intermediate School. Shortly thereafter, he transitioned to Marion Primary School, where he ultimately ascended to the position of assistant principal. He begun his teaching profession at Marion Intermediate School. In 1973, Mayor Helms was offered the chance to become the principal of Marion Primary School.

He remained in this position until 2000, when he chose to resign from the field of secondary education. Helms exhibited his dedication to public service by being a member of the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department.

Furthermore, he maintained active participation in various organizations and events, advocating for initiatives such as the local VFW and Memorial Day activities. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Emory & Henry undergraduate of Health Sciences in Marion. Helms was a member of the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department during his tenure.

During Mayor Helms’ third term on the Marion Town Council, he made the decision to run for mayor and was successful in winning the election in 2000. He served in that role until his death. In 1990, Mayor Helms was elected to the Marion Town Council for the first time. His life was characterized by patriotism, public duty, and community involvement. He will be remembered for his unflinching dedication to upholding these beliefs throughout his whole live.

A significant number of folks will feel sorrowful due to their inability to engage in the daily activities held at Town Hall, local festivals and events, and various gatherings across the state. We extend our condolences to Sue Helms, as well as the other individuals connected to the Mayor’s family and social circle.
