On March 19, Robert Stephenson Greer, Jr. passed away as a result of metastasized cancer which had spread throughout his body. The first child of Patricia Pettry and Robert S. Greer, Sr., Bob Greer was born on July 20, 1947 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was called Bob. Bob Greer passed away after 58 years of marriage to his wife, Alice Dugas Greer.
He is the father of Steve Greer, who is engaged to Sunny Mayhall, and Jonathan Greer, who is known as Pokey. Alice and Bob Greer are the delighted grandparents of three grandchildren: two granddaughters, Cassie Greer Beychok (who is married to Bradley and has children Amelia and Beau), and Gifford Greer; three grandsons, Cody Greer (who is married to Addie and has children Parker, Millie, and Eloise), Jakob Greer, and Rhett Greer.
The manner in which he led was unassuming but motivating. His modest and unassuming demeanor, together with his sympathy for other people and his ability to make friends with each and every person who entered his life, unquestionably served as a model for all those individuals who had the good fortune to be acquainted with him. Bob’s parents, Fred Jones Greer and Nany Stephenson Greer, as well as his brother, Fred Jones Greer Jr., passed away before him. His wife of 57 years, Patricia Pettry Greer, also passed away before him. He is survived by his two sons, Robert Stephenson Greer Jr. and Dr. John Pettry Greer; two daughters-in-law, Alice Dugas Greer and Gay Nienhuis Greer; four grandsons, Robert Stephenson Greer III, Jonathan Kramer Greer, Adam Tyler Greer and Scott Chappell Greer; a granddaughter, Lesley McLaughlin Greer; a granddaughter-in-law, René Phillips Greer; three great-grandsons, Cody Ryan Wilson, Jonathan Kramer Greer Jr. and Rhett Barton Greer; and two great-granddaughters.
Cassie Elaine Greer and Gifford Elizabeth Greer. Grandsons Steve, Jonathan, and Scott Greer, as well as great-grandson Cody Wilson, and nephews Fred J. Greer III and F. Charles McMains Jr., will serve as pallbearers at the funeral service. Honorary pallbearers include the following individuals: the grandchild, Adam Greer; Frank C. and Ann Greer McMains; John B. Staples; Harry J. Moreau; Faye Dugas and Kirby J. Guidry; Gypsye Dugas and Robert L. Bryan; Mac and Sheryl Womack; Margaret Womack; Karen Deville; and Paula Gandy. In particular, we would like to express our gratitude to Mary Lee Robinson, Virginia McDonald, Anthony O’Connor, and Elva Evans, as well as to all of the other caregivers and other exceptional individuals who played such an essential role in Bob’s life.
John, and his wife, Gay, as well as to Yvette Bonanno, who have been an incredible blessing to the family during this difficult time. Bob is also survived by a very large number of devoted members of his family as well as cherished friends who are aware of the significance that Bob brought into their lives. As of May 2010, Bob was appointed to the position of Director at Business First Bancshare Inc., also known as b1BANK. Since 2011, Bob has been serving as Chairman of the Board of b1BANK. In the past, Bob has held the positions of President and Chief Executive Officer at a number of insurance firms around the United States. These companies include Union National Life Insurance Company, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Unitrin Corporation, located in Chicago, Illinois; Providian Insurance, located in Louisville, Kentucky; and in Baton Rouge, LEMIC Insurance Company.
Over the course of several decades, Bob has been actively involved in the communities of Baton Rouge, Chicago, and Louisville, providing assistance to a wide range of organizations, such as Mary Bird Perkins, Woman’s Hospital, and the United Way, to name just a few. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at St. George Catholic Church, which is located at 7808 St. George Avenue, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70809, and will be presided over by Father Cleo Milano, who continues to serve as a spiritual support for the family. Funeral services will commence at nine o’clock in the morning, followed by a funeral mass at ten thirty, and then burial will take place in the St. George Cemetery.
During this trying time, the family would like to express their gratitude to Father Paul Yi, Ann Bertsch, and Laura Blanchard for their outpouring of charity.
