Yesterday afternoon, the world lost a magnificent person. Mary O’Reilly, the VSA Programme Manager in Vanuatu, died quietly at home, surrounded by her loved ones. Her loss leaves a void not only in her family’s hearts, but also in the larger community, where she impacted so many lives.
Mary was a valued part of the VSA family, recognized for her warmth, compassion, and unshakable dedication to her profession. Her influence extended far beyond New Zealand’s boundaries, reaching those in Vanuatu, where she volunteered her time and talents with VSA.
One of Mary’s most remarkable accomplishments was her critical role in reestablishing VSA’s program and reputation in Vanuatu following COVID. In the face of enormous problems, she demonstrated tenacity and commitment, guiding her team with grace and fortitude. Through her imaginative leadership, she not only revitalized VSA’s presence, but also built important partnerships and collaborations, increasing the organization’s efficacy in aiding Vanuatu communities.
However, Mary’s accomplishments went well beyond her professional endeavors. She began her involvement with VSA as a volunteer, working as a Waste Management Adviser for the Luganville Municipal Council and the Sanma Provincial Government. During this time, she displayed her dedication to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Mary’s enthusiasm for her job was contagious, prompting others to join her in her quest to build a cleaner, healthier environment for all.
Those who had the opportunity to work with Mary instantly admired her remarkable leadership qualities, capacity to inspire others, and unfailing integrity. She was more than just a manager; she was a mentor, friend, and source of advice for many others. Her sincere concern for the well-being of those around her left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Mary left a legacy of strength, compassion, and service. She reflected VSA’s ideals by embodying the spirit of partnership and collaboration in her work. Her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others, particularly in Vanuatu’s villages, is an inspiration to all of us.
As we grieve Mary’s death, let us also commemorate her life and the great impact she had on the globe. Her memory will continue to inspire us to strive for greatness, face obstacles bravely, and always lead with compassion and generosity.
In her memory, let us renew our dedication to the ideals she cherished and carry on her legacy of service. Mary may no longer be with us in person, but her spirit will live on through the countless lives she touched and the lasting contributions she made to society.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mary’s family, friends, and colleagues. May you take comfort in knowing that Mary’s legacy will go on, and her memory will always be treasured in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, the point of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, honorable, compassionate, and to make a difference by living and living well. Mary O’Reilly led a fulfilling life, leaving a legacy of care and compassion that will continue to inspire us for many years to come.
