Vicksburg/Tupelo-Mary Elizabeth McKay Stroud, a beloved member of the community, peacefully departed this world on February 9, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on May 5, 1932, in Vicksburg, MS, Mary was the daughter of Walter L. McKay and Gladys McNemar, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and culinary prowess. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Doug Stroud, a lab technician at the same hospital. Their professional connection blossomed into a beautiful love story, and they exchanged vows on December 31, 1952.
Cherished Family Moments: The Heart of Mary’s Joy
Mary’s love for her family was the cornerstone of her joy. Whether gathered for a traditional Sunday roast, holiday celebrations, or beach vacations, Mary cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. Her kitchen was not just a place to prepare meals but a hub of warmth, laughter, and delightful aromas. Cooking and baking were among Mary’s many talents. Her culinary skills went beyond family meals; she extended her love for food to her community. Hosting gatherings, catering events, and sharing meals with friends and church members were expressions of her generous spirit. Mary’s kitchen was a source of comfort, and her culinary creations brought joy to those fortunate enough to savor them.
A Love for Flowers: Blooms of Joy in Mary’s Life
Flowers held a special place in Mary’s heart. Whether cultivating them, arranging exquisite bouquets, or simply admiring them in her room at assisted living, flowers brought her immense joy. The vibrant colors and delicate fragrances mirrored the beauty Mary found in life. Mary’s faith played a central role in her life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Vicksburg, MS, for many years. Upon moving to Tupelo in September 2011 with Doug, they became dedicated members of Calvary Baptist Church. Mary lived out her faith daily, becoming a role model for her children and grandchildren. Her unwavering belief in Jesus filled her with the joyous anticipation of reuniting with family and friends in heaven.
A Lasting Legacy: Family and Faith
Mary is survived by her four daughters: Pam Wilburn of Tupelo, MS; Pat (Mark) Cooper of Arlington, TX; Cheryl (Tee) Turner of Starkville, MS; and Judy (Jeff) Sewell of Tupelo, MS. Her legacy extends to seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Walter McKay, Jr., James McKay, and sister Zelma Owen.
