On February 8, 2024, the community of Broadway bid farewell to one of its esteemed residents, Edwin “Ed” P. Usher, who passed away at the age of 88. A lifelong inhabitant of Hastings-on-Hudson, Ed’s journey, marked by athletic prowess, military service, and a deep commitment to his community, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Edwin Usher’s story began on April 13, 1935, when he was born in his childhood home to Edward and Margaret Usher. Raised in Hastings-on-Hudson, Ed quickly distinguished himself as an accomplished athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. His sporting achievements were duly recognized in 2000 when he became part of the inaugural class inducted into the Hastings High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Service to Country and Community
Following his high school graduation, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy. Stationed in the Mediterranean Sea on the USS Antietam, he served his country with honor and dedication. After his honorable discharge, Ed returned to Hastings-on-Hudson and began working for the Village Department of Public Works, contributing to the betterment of his community. At the age of 24, Ed joined the Hastings Volunteer Fire Department’s Hook and Ladder Company, embarking on a remarkable 64-year journey of service.
Over the years, he rose to the position of company Captain, leaving an enduring legacy of commitment. Ed was the second generation of a family deeply rooted in the tradition of serving at “The Hook,” following in the footsteps of his father and brothers. A source of immense pride was witnessing his two sons and later his grandsons continuing this cherished family tradition.
A Love Story at Nick’s Restaurant
In June 1973, fate intervened at Nick’s Restaurant, where Ed met the love of his life, Lorraine Johnson. Their connection blossomed over a friendly game of shuffleboard, and they soon found themselves embarking on a lifelong journey together. Marrying a few years later, Ed and Lorraine chose to make Hastings their home, creating a nurturing environment to raise their family. Ed’s engagement with the community extended beyond his service with the fire department.
He was an active member of the Hastings Southside Club and the American Legion – Admiral Farragut Post 1195. Ed’s passion for sports continued into adulthood, with his involvement in fast-pitch softball as a pitcher. He later transitioned into umpiring for village softball leagues and refereeing high school football games. Golf was another love of Ed’s, and he achieved the elusive hole-in-one during his time in Calabash, North Carolina.
Family, Friendship, and Culinary Skills
Ed’s warmth extended to the kitchen, where he showcased his culinary talents. Renowned for his delectable homemade apple pies and unmatched meatballs, Ed found joy in preparing meals that brought family and friends together. The Usher household became a hub of love, laughter, and shared moments around the dining table. Ed leaves behind a legacy of love and community spirit.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Lorraine, and their children: Edward, Michael (Kelly), and Denise. His memory lives on in the hearts of his five grandchildren: Brian, Kevin, Lily, Maddie, and James. Ed is also remembered by his sister, Lottie Ann Forshaw, sister-in-law Helen Usher, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers George, Robert, Kenneth, and David.
