Sean was a pivotal figure in the club’s resurgence during the late 1970s, playing a key role in reforming and restructuring it into the dynamic organization it is today. His commitment extended beyond the administrative realm as he took on roles as club treasurer, divisional, and county board delegate, showcasing a multifaceted dedication to the success and growth of Moygownagh GAA.
Born in Sligo, Sean, along with his beloved late wife Judy, settled in Moygownagh after returning from London in the early 1970s. Their entrepreneurial spirit led them to purchase Commons’ shop, where they established a traveling shop and a popular pub venue known for music and dancing. Simultaneously, they developed a thriving hardware shop and agricultural feedstore, becoming integral contributors to the local economy. Sean’s business acumen was evident in their approach to customer service. The Mitchells were known for going above and beyond to meet the needs of their customers, a testament to Sean’s unwavering dedication to his community. His tireless work ethic and commitment to customer satisfaction helped establish Mitchells as a trusted establishment serving North Mayo.
Beyond business success, Sean’s contributions extended to rural development and community initiatives. He played a vital role in the street lighting of Moygownagh, social housing projects at Knockroe, and various community amenities. His involvement in Moygownagh GAA is particularly noteworthy, contributing significantly to the establishment of the club’s community center, playing field, viewing stand, and childcare and education forum. During the 1980s, Sean was instrumental in organizing Mid Summer festivals and sports days, fostering a sense of community spirit and pride. His love for Moygownagh GAA was matched only by his passion for the Mayo senior football team, and he could be found traveling far and wide to support his county. The Mitchell family continues to be one of the club’s most loyal sponsors and ardent supporters.

Sean Mitchell passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, January 19, 2024. He was predeceased by his wife Judy, brother Paddy, and sister Rita. Moygownagh GAA extends its deepest condolences to his children Richard, John, Geraldine, Siobhan, and Rachel, their spouses, his grandchildren, siblings, extended family, neighbors, and friends.
