John McGarry Obituary, A Soul Gone Too Soon

Tyngsborough bids farewell to a cherished resident, John M. “Jack” McGarry, who passed away at Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. At the age of 83, Jack left behind a legacy of warmth, dedication, and a profound love for family. His departure has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones, especially his beloved wife, Rose B. (Antico) McGarry, with whom he shared 32 years of marriage and a total of 42 years together. Born in Lowell on October 30, 1940, Jack was the son of the late John and Mary Madeline (Sheridan) McGarry. He embarked on his educational journey at Lowell High School, where he laid the foundation for a future marked by continuous learning and dedication to his craft.

Throughout most of his career, Jack contributed his skills to technical assistance at the Laboratory for Electronics. Undeterred by the demands of work, he pursued further education through various courses offered by his employer. Even in retirement, Jack remained active, immersing himself in train engine maintenance for Amtrak.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Jack was a fixture in the Lowell community, leaving his mark as a longtime member of the Lowell Elks and the Dom Polski Club. His zest for life extended to memorable vacations in Ireland and Aruba, and he took great pride in constructing the family home while nurturing beautiful gardens.

A fervent sports fan, Jack’s heart belonged to the Patriots and the Red Sox. He had a penchant for the baked beans from Cote’s Market and relished lunch at Elliott’s Hot Dogs. Family held a special place in Jack’s heart, and he reveled in spending time with his children and grandchildren.

The joy of family gatherings, especially during holidays, brought him immeasurable happiness. Jack is survived by his daughter, Colleen Gabriel of Tyngsborough, his granddaughter Meghan Goldthwaite, and her wife Kristyn of Nashua, NH. His great grandson, Sean, brought additional joy and pride to his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Maryruth Surprenant of Dracut and James McGarry of Tyngsborough, along with several nieces and nephews. Jack’s faithful companion, his beloved dog Max, will miss his presence.

Unfortunately, Jack was predeceased by his son, Sean McGarry, his oldest sister, Eleanor Eliopoulos, and his brother-in-law, Gerald Surprenant. The memories of Jack’s warm smile, his dedication to family, and his vibrant spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know and love him.

Tyngsborough remembers Jack not only for his professional achievements and community involvement but for the way he touched lives with his kindness, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to his loved ones. His legacy lives on through the stories shared, the gardens he tended, and the warmth of family gatherings that he so dearly cherished.
