At the tender age of 37, Steven departed from this world on Saturday, January 13, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a profound impact on those fortunate enough to have known him. Born on November 18, 1986, in Watertown, SD, Steven was welcomed into the world by his parents, Kevin and Jill Christofferson. His journey through education led him to the Summit School, where he graduated with the class of 2005. Eager to further his skills, Steven pursued studies in Building Trades at Lake Area Technical Institute, setting the foundation for a career that would unfold with time.
In 2003, Steven joined Benchmark Foam, a decision that marked the beginning of a professional journey that spanned over two decades. Starting as a young and eager employee, Steven’s dedication, reliability, and good-natured spirit quickly made him an invaluable member of the Benchmark Foam family. Over the years, he transitioned into Sales, showcasing not only his work ethic but also his ability to build lasting connections with colleagues and clients alike. On July 16, 2011, Steven embarked on a new chapter of life, exchanging vows with his high school sweetheart, Kaitlyn Nietert, at Tacoma Park Place, SD. Their love story blossomed into a beautiful family as they settled in Summit, SD, and welcomed three daughters into their lives. The bonds of family were Steven’s top priority, and his commitment to the happiness and well-being of Kaitlyn and their daughters reflected the depth of his character.
Described as a quiet observer, Steven had an innate ability to infuse joy into every room he entered. His quick wit, penchant for cracking jokes, assigning nicknames, and delivering spot-on impressions endeared him to all who had the pleasure of sharing a moment with him. His humor was a light that brightened the lives of those around him. Beyond the confines of his professional life, Steven’s passions painted a multifaceted picture of his rich personality. A gifted craftsman, he lent his skills generously to friends and neighbors, embodying the spirit of community. An avid outdoorsman, Steven found solace in the tranquility of hunting and fishing, connecting with nature in a profound way.
His talents extended to the kitchen, where he mastered the art of smoking. With generosity characteristic of his nature, Steven passed down his “tips and tricks” to his daughters, creating cherished memories in the heart of their home. Recently moving into his dream house, Steven found joy in the simple pleasures, often gazing out the windows in search of wildlife. A devoted fan of the Minnesota Twins, Steven’s cheers resonated through the highs and lows of each game. His love for traveling and spending time with “the crew” and family brought immeasurable joy. In these moments, Steven’s zest for life shone brightly, creating memories that will be treasured by those who shared in his adventures.
Farewell Services: Honoring Steven’s Life
The community will come together to honor Steven’s life at Summit School in Summit on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Janet Miller and Rev. Justin Neugebauer will officiate, with the service live-streamed for those unable to attend in person. Visitation will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Summit on Thursday from 4-7 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Steven will find his final resting place at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Summit. Honorary pallbearers will be Steven’s nieces and nephews, alongside his coworkers from Benchmark Foam. Active pallbearers, entrusted with carrying him to his resting place, include Mark Amdahl, Mark Miller, Evan Pottebaum, Dusty Nelson, Josh Rudebusch, and Stuart Pearson.
A Memorial for Steven’s Children
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made out to Kaitlyn Christofferson. These contributions will be directed toward a trust for Steven’s children, ensuring that his legacy of love and care continues to support his family in the years to come. As the community gathers to bid farewell to Steven R. Christofferson, there will be tears shed in mourning, but also smiles exchanged in remembrance of the laughter he shared.
