John McLaughlin Obituary, In Loving Memory Of John McLaughlin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John McLaughlin, a beloved husband, father, and friend, at the age of 72. John, who recently retired to Ladysmith after residing in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, left us far too soon after a brief struggle with cancer. He peacefully departed this world at home, surrounded by family, with Sheila, his best friend and loving wife of 43 years, by his side.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, to James and Clotilde McLaughlin, John grew up in a home filled with art and encouragement for his creative pursuits. His natural talent led him to teach himself to play the guitar and craft songs.

Under the name John Laughlin, he released the solo album “Morning Moon” in 1973, which garnered national attention. Throughout the next fifty years, John’s musical prowess continued to grow, earning him recognition as a skilled guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter.

As a student and lover of music, John developed a discerning palate that he fearlessly shared during his career as a music journalist. For over two decades, he served as a music columnist for The Province newspaper, conducting interviews with more than 500 artists, ranging from Steve Earle to Johnny Cash to Jim Byrnes.

John had a unique ability to draw out the personal stories behind the musicians, shaping their narratives to ignite interest in new music across all genres.

He found his greatest joy with a guitar on his knee, surrounded by family and friends, sharing the magic of music. John was a kind, gentle, and introspective soul, leaving behind a legacy of love and creativity that will be cherished by all who knew him.
