On January 10, 2024, the community of High Falls mourned the loss of a beloved figure, M. Richard (Dick) Davenport, who passed away surrounded by his family. Born on October 9, 1931, in Kingston, New York, to Gertrude Woolsey Davenport and Maurice Davenport, Dick’s life was one marked by dedication to his community, family, and a steadfast commitment to service.
Dick’s educational journey began at High Falls Grade School, where he graduated in 1946, distinguishing himself as one of the top four students in his class of four. His academic journey continued at Kingston High School, where he graduated in 1950. Undeterred by the challenges of a small graduating class, Dick’s ambition led him to Middlebury College in Vermont, where he graduated in 1954. At Middlebury, he not only pursued his academic studies but also showcased his athletic prowess by participating in varsity football and golf.
June 19, 1954, marked another significant milestone in Dick’s life when he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Flint, at the Fair Street Reformed Church. The newlyweds embarked on an adventure together as Dick immediately began his U.S Army military service in Straubling, West Germany, with the Fifth Armored, Victory Division.
Returning to Marbletown in 1957, Dick joined the family business, Walter Davenport & Sons, which later became Heritagenergy Inc. His role at the ‘feed mill’ and office evolved over the years, and he eventually assumed the position of President, contributing significantly to the company’s success.
Dick’s impact extended far beyond the business realm. He was deeply ingrained in the fabric of the High Falls community, dedicating his time and energy to various causes. As a Life Member of the High Falls Fire Company, Dick was a pillar of support during times of crisis. His involvement in Scouting, particularly with Troop 16, exemplified his commitment to shaping the lives of the younger generation.
His dedication to faith was evident through his active participation in the Marbletown Reformed Church. Dick not only taught Sunday school but also served on the consistory, leaving an indelible mark on the spiritual community he cherished.
Beyond his professional and community endeavors, Dick found joy and solace in recreational activities. Golfing at Wiltwyck and Stone Dock, hiking in the Catskills and the Gunks, skiing at Highmount, and multi-generational trips to Ocean City, NJ, were among the many pursuits that brought joy to him and his family.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Betty, and their four children: Jim (Nancy), Sue (Steve) Powers, Betsy (Nick) Rama, and David (Sherri). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Kate Collingbourne, Jay Davenport, Willis Davenport, Jennifer Powers, Jim Powers, Steven Powers, Jessica Powers, Tedd Rama, Emily Rama, Kasey Harrison, and Lauren Davenport. Additionally, he leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, spread across Hendersonville, TN, Averill Park, Miller Place, and Middletown, NY.
As the community grieves, it is important to remember the profound impact Dick had on the lives of those around him. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ronald Tedd Davenport, sister and brother-in-law Patricia Hall and John P. Hall Sr., as well as nephews Harry D. Hall and Rich Hall. Their memories, along with Dick’s enduring legacy, will continue to be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In commemorating the life of M. Richard (Dick) Davenport, let us reflect on his contributions, not only to the business world and the community but also to the richness of family life and the values he imparted to generations. May his spirit live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
