It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Gary Laverne Matheson, on Monday, January 8, 2024. Surrounded by his loving family at Stratford General Hospital, Gary’s journey on this earth concluded after a valiant battle against various health issues. In his memory, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of love, resilience, and enduring commitment.
Gary was the cherished husband and partner of Debbie (MacLeod) for an incredible 41 years. He was the proud and loving Dad to Greg (Samantha), Ryan (Vicki), Andrew, and Kurtis.
A doting Grandpa, Gary leaves behind a treasured legacy in his grandchildren, Luke, Zachary, Khenan, Kage, Sophie, and Colby. The Matheson family mourns the loss of a pillar of strength and love, and the void left by Gary’s passing is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on February 5, 1953, Gary spent his entire life on the Matheson home farm in Zorra Township near Bennington. His roots firmly planted in the soil, he began his working life driving truck for various companies, including Finnie’s Transport, Hutton Transport, Milkway, and West Zorra Township. Gary’s eyes would light up as he recounted the adventures of driving transport throughout Ontario, a chapter of his life that added to the rich tapestry of his experiences.
However, Gary’s true passion lay in farming. In 1982, alongside his devoted wife, Deb, he established Zorrabrae Farm, a family dairy and egg-layer operation that became a testament to his dedication and love for the land. Over the past year, Gary took immense pride in building and managing a new robot dairy barn, symbolizing a legacy of farming that he was passing on to the next generation. He could often be found in his barn office chair, overseeing his herd with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
As a farmer, Gary understood and respected the circle of life in all its aspects. Facing the unpredictable nature of farming, he approached challenges with courage and grace, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His commitment to the land and the animals under his care reflected a deep connection to the rhythms of life, and his legacy in agriculture will endure.
Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Gary was a proud Past-President of Embro Minor Hockey, leaving an impact on the community through his dedication to youth sports. His selflessness extended to being a dedicated lifelong blood donor, underscoring his commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Gary’s greatest joy and pride, however, came from being a dad and a grandpa. Balancing the demands of farming with quality family time, he seamlessly integrated the two, creating a harmonious existence where love and hard work coexisted. His quiet wisdom, wonderful sense of humor, practical nature, generosity, and determination were the cornerstones of his character, leaving an indelible impression on all who knew him.
In the midst of grief, the Matheson family and friends find solace in the beautiful memories and enduring legacy Gary leaves behind. His laughter, his stories, and his unwavering commitment to family will be etched in their hearts forever. The impact of his quiet wisdom and practical approach to life will continue to guide those who were fortunate enough to call him a friend, husband, father, or grandfather.
As we bid farewell to Gary Laverne Matheson, may we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by resilience, love, and a commitment to family and community. His memory will forever linger in the fields he cultivated, the laughter he shared, and the love he generously bestowed upon all who were part of his journey.
