During a news conference that took place on Wednesday afternoon, Chief Steve Drew of the Newport News Police Department addressed a shooting that took place on Tuesday night between his officers and an armed man who, according to them, was going through a mental health crisis. The incident took place between the police and the guy.
The suspect, who was subsequently identified as Jean Alcindor, 42 years old, did not comply with the commands of multiple officers to lower his pistol, according to Chief Drew.
Alcindor was eventually identified as the individual. After the encounter came to an end, the individual sustained injuries as a result of the exchange of gunfire that took place.
On Tuesday evening, at eight o’clock, a concerned family member contacted 911 to report that Alcindor was displaying behaviors that may be deemed suicidal and that she may have been taking drugs.
The family member also reported that Alcindor possibly had been using drugs. Drew reported that the police noticed the individual inside a car who was in possession of a weapon shortly after that, when patrol officers arrived at Cleveland Avenue near City Center at Oyster Point.
This occurred a short length of time after the previous event. Thereafter, while he was still inside the vehicle, the man fired a round from the handgun he was carrying. The negotiators were able to get in touch with Alcindor over the phone earlier than nine o’clock in the evening during the meeting.
Drew said that the suspect exited the vehicle while holding the pistol and began to advance towards the police, firing a second gunshot. This occurred approximately about 10:30 p.m., according to Drew’s report.
