Tragically, we must inform you of the demise of Jim Ladd, a renowned character in Los Angeles radio who was affectionately called “The Lonesome L.A. Cowboy.” Jim, who had a heart attack on Saturday and was 75 years old, died at his home in Los Angeles. Throughout the globe, not only in Southern California, his impact on rock radio will be felt for decades to come.
A veteran deejay with a career spanning decades, Jim Ladd captivated listeners with his distinct voice, passion for music, and commitment to freeform radio over his twelve years hosting a SiriusXM show. In honor of Ladd’s impact on the music industry, Tom Petty paid tribute to him on his album “The Last DJ,” which immortalizes his legacy and extends well beyond the radio.
Ladd, who came into this world on January 17, 1948, was a witness to the rise of the underground album-oriented rock style. Starting his radio career in the late ’60s at Long Beach, California’s KNAC-FM, he eventually became a freeform radio legend. While working as a disc jockey for two of Los Angeles’ most famous radio stations, KLOS-FM and KMET, Ladd became known as “Top Rock Jock.”
Live weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m. PT, Ladd’s SiriusXM show was his first national television appearance. He remained true to his convictions by playing music from all around the globe, including Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and countless more. Being an advocate for genuine radio and free speech was only one of Jim Ladd’s many passions.
Performers and viewers alike were captivated by his respected sayings, including “Love have mercy,” and his commitment to themed events. After departing from KLOS and other traditional radio stations, his love for music and singing never faded. Roger Waters’ 1987 solo album “Radio K.A.O.S.” featured Ladd’s voice. Both Ladd and Waters were close friends; Waters also played drums for Pink Floyd. He collaborated with Tom Petty on the song “The Last DJ,” which was a powerful indictment of the music industry. Radio and the music industry were forever changed by Jim Ladd.
His contagious enthusiasm, the music he performed, and the people he encouraged to find their voices all contributed to an unforgettable impact. While we grieve his loss, let us also rejoice in the timeless popularity of his song, “The Lonesome L.A. Cowboy.” His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved his freeform radio programming. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with Jim Ladd’s loved ones at this time of loss. His soul will remain untouched, and his cherished music will forever carry his voice.
