William Cherniwchan Obituary, In Loving Memory Of William Cherniwchan

 – It is with profound sorrow that the family of William John (Johnny) Cherniwchan of Bellis, AB, announces his peaceful passing on December 11, 2023, at the age of 74. Johnny, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and deep connections to his rural roots.

Survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Nancy, Johnny was the loving patriarch of a large and close-knit family. He is remembered fondly by his four sons: Kevin (Tracy), Sheldon (Karen), Shawn (Donna), Dean (Connie), and daughter Leanna (Will) Gray. His grandchildren, Courtney, Derek, Jake, Lauren, Maxim, Tanner, Justin, Nathan, Kyle, Reed, Austin, Isabella, Abbygail, and Mason, are a testament to the enduring love and joy that Johnny brought into their lives. He is also survived by his sister Betty Fields and his mother Cecelia Cherniwchan.

Johnny was born in Vilna, AB, on October 21, 1949, and after graduating high school, he spent time working in Edmonton. In 1974, he returned to the farm near Bellis with Nancy, creating a haven where they raised their family. Johnny’s connection to rural life was at the heart of his identity, shaping his character and influencing his legacy.

Remembered as a family man and cherished friend and neighbor, Johnny’s hospitality and welcoming nature endeared him to many. His impact on the community was profound, and his memory will live on through the connections he forged.

A private celebration of Johnny’s life will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to come together in remembrance. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to “Haying in the 30’s” or a charity of one’s choice. To convey condolences online, please visit www.gracegardensfuneralchapel.com.
