Walter Arnd Obituary, A Remarkable Life Remembered

Walter Glenn Arndt, who resided in Hickory and was 93 years old, passed away early on the morning of Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Although he was born in Catawba County on July 23, 1930, he was the son of Grover Daniel Arndt, who passed away, and Lucy Belle Setzer Arndt, who resided in Maiden, North Carolina. With time, the family relocated to Hickory, which occurred in the early 1930s.

Glenn’s siblings, Eunice Lucille Arndt Bumgarner and Nancy Lou Arndt Herman, as well as his brother, George Daniel Arndt, passed away before him. His parents were also among those who passed away before him. There were three high schools that Glenn attended: Viewmont, Green Park, and Hickory. It was then that he started his many years of public service, the majority of which were spent working in the bread sector, driving a truck for bakeries such as Silver Crest, Holsum, and Sunbeam over the course of his career.

In addition to being on the Church Council for a considerable amount of time and on the Property Committee for a considerable amount of time, Glenn was a longstanding member of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church ELCA in Hickory. Both the structures and the grounds of Mount Olive were the focus of his diligent labor.

Whether it was on television or in real life, Glenn was a huge sports fan. He enjoyed bowling, bowling, golf, and hunting rabbits. He also enjoyed playing church softball. Whenever there was a game of baseball, football, or basketball on television, the television was always playing. The number one spot went to the Minnesota Twins and Duke University.

His wife of 69 years, Nancy Townsend Arndt, his daughter Adeliah Helen Arndt, his son Michael Glenn Arndt and his wife Alix, his grandchildren Charlotte Arndt, James Arndt, Andrew Arndt, Daniel Arndt, Caroline Arndt, Abigail Arndt, Ayeshea Conner, Joshua Goebel, Amy Goebel, and Shaya Bye, and his great-grandchildren Maverick Goebel, Colin Bye, Ivy Bye, Addison Sigmon, and Haiden Goebel are among those who mourn Glenn’s passing.

On Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., a Memorial Service will be place at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church ELCA in Hickory. Pastor Ryan Ray will preside over the ceremony. The burial will take place at the Church Cemetery then.
Immediately before to the ceremony, there will be a gathering of friends that will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made in place of flowers to the Mount Olive Lutheran Church ELCA, which is located at 2780 North Center Street, Hickory, North Carolina 28401.
