On the evening of November 29, 2023, the Southend-on-Sea community bid farewell to a beloved figure, Jim Clinkscales, who passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with dementia. Born on June 23, 1933, Jim’s legacy extends beyond his years of service as a Liberal Democrat Councillor; he was a sincere and honorable gentleman who touched the lives of many.
Jim’s political journey began in 2003 when he became the Liberal Democrat Councillor for Blenheim Park ward, a role he passionately fulfilled until 2011.
His dedication and integrity earned him the position of Deputy Leader for the Lib-Dems during that time, where he forged enduring friendships with councillors and ex-councillors across party lines. Even after concluding his councillor duties, Jim’s commitment to public service persisted.
He assumed the role of Chair of the Lib-Dem group, a testament to his unwavering dedication. Known for his warmth and approachability, Jim’s leadership left an indelible mark on the Southend-on-Sea political landscape.
Beyond politics, Jim was a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His family and friends remember him not only for his public contributions but also for the kindness and generosity he displayed in his personal relationships.
As we mourn the loss of Jim Clinkscales, let us also celebrate the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to serving the community and building bridges across party lines.
