It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Dwayne Dukes, a distinguished graduate of the Georgia School for the Deaf (GSD) in 1949 and Gallaudet University in 1954. Dwayne, who was well into his 90s, left a lasting impact on the Gallaudet community and beyond. His contributions as an alumnus and his commitment to the Gallaudet School for the Deaf Alumni Association (GSDAA) were nothing short of commendable.
I had the privilege of working alongside Dwayne on the GSDAA 175th Anniversary committee, an experience that allowed me to witness firsthand his dedication to preserving the rich history and legacy of the Georgia School for the Deaf. Dwayne’s passion for fostering connections among alumni and ensuring that the stories of GSD were shared and celebrated was truly inspiring. My first encounter with Dwayne occurred during the Gallaudet Class 25th Anniversary in 2019. As we reminisced about our time at Gallaudet, I quickly recognized the depth of his love for the institution and his genuine interest in fostering a sense of community among fellow alumni. Dwayne’s warm and welcoming demeanor made it easy for anyone to connect with him, and his enthusiasm for Gallaudet’s mission was contagious.
Dwayne’s impact extended far beyond the walls of Gallaudet. His commitment to preserving the history of GSD and supporting initiatives that brought the deaf community together showcased his unwavering dedication to the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Through his involvement in various alumni activities and committees, Dwayne played a crucial role in strengthening the bonds among graduates of GSD and Gallaudet.
