John Ballard obituary, death: A Shining Star in the Camp Mikell Family”

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear friend, John Ballard, a cherished member of the Camp Mikell family. John’s life was a testament to love, service, and community, and his contributions will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the enduring spirit of Camp Mikell.

John was deeply rooted in the Mikell tradition, proudly carrying the legacy of a third-generation camper. From his early days as a camper to his later roles as a counselor and summer staff member during his college years, John embodied the spirit of camaraderie and dedication that defines the Mikell experience. In more recent years, John remained an integral part of the Mikell family, volunteering with the Diocesan Youth Commission (DYC), serving on the Mikell Board of Governors, and sharing his talents as a wood-turning instructor at the Allan Folk School.

Summers at Mikell were made brighter by John’s presence as a Work Camp dean’s staff member, where his guidance, humor, and dedication left a lasting impression. His impact on the lives of countless campers and staff members will never be forgotten.

To honor and celebrate John’s remarkable life, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at Camp Mikell on Saturday, December 7, at 12:00 p.m. Following the service, attendees are invited to a potluck meal for fellowship and remembrance. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share as we come together to honor John’s memory in the warm and welcoming environment he loved so much.

In keeping with John’s vibrant spirit, his family requests attendees to wear blue or green, his favorite colors. As camp life is casual, comfortable attire is encouraged. Additionally, if you have a photo of John, please bring it to display. Whether framed or unframed, these photos will provide a beautiful tapestry of John’s life, showcasing the many areas where he made an impact.

For those wishing to stay overnight at Camp Mikell on Friday or Saturday, accommodations are available. Please contact Amanda at Camp Mikell by calling 706-886-7515 or emailing amanda@campmikell.com for lodging arrangements or additional information about the gathering.

John Ballard will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain a part of Camp Mikell and the many lives he enriched. Let us come together to celebrate his life, share memories, and honor a remarkable man who gave so much of himself to others.
