A devastating structure fire in Copperas Cove on Thanksgiving morning resulted in the loss of life of 61-year-old George Freeman, while his wife and seven children escaped unharmed. The fire, which originated in the garage, caused extensive damage to the home and claimed the life of Freeman, despite the valiant efforts of firefighters.
The Copperas Cove Fire Department responded to the alarm at approximately 4:33 a.m. on Circle Drive, with two fire engines, three ambulances, a shift supervisor, and several police officers arriving on the scene. Upon arrival, crews encountered flames and heavy smoke emanating from the front and garage sides of the single-family residence.
Firefighters immediately entered the home, battling dense smoke that rendered visibility nonexistent. While some focused on extinguishing the fire in the garage, others conducted a thorough search of the home. Shortly after entering, firefighters located Freeman and swiftly removed him from the residence. Despite performing life-saving measures at the scene, Freeman was pronounced dead.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes of the fire department’s arrival, but not before causing extensive damage to the garage, dining room, kitchen, and living room. The remainder of the home suffered significant smoke damage.
The Freeman family, consisting of George’s wife and their seven children, successfully escaped the fire and are safe. They are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal.
