Serenity Birdsong MTSU Suicide, Obituary, Death: Trans Student Leader and Vice President of MT Lambda, Serenity Birdsong, Dies by Suicide in Campus Library, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Love, Compassion, and Support.
The Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) community is deeply mourning the tragic loss of Serenity Birdsong, a transgender student and vice president of the student LGBTQ+ organization MT Lambda, who died by suicide on Monday in the campus’s James E. Walker Library.
This devastating incident has cast a profound sense of grief over students, faculty, and members of MT Lambda, who remember Birdsong for her warmth, compassion, and positive impact on those around her.
In response to Birdsong’s passing, MTSU canceled classes and closed the library on Tuesday, resuming normal operations on Wednesday.
The university and MT Lambda have since extended support to grieving students by making counseling services available on campus.
Birdsong’s organization, MT Lambda, which promotes inclusivity and support for LGBTQ+ students, expressed heartfelt sorrow in a social media tribute, describing her as a cherished friend and a bright presence within their community.
“It is this darkness that snuffed out Serenity’s light,” MT Lambda wrote, reflecting on the harsh realities that LGBTQ+ individuals, especially transgender people, often face.
The community is also gathering to honor Birdsong’s memory. MT Lambda canceled its planned Halloween party and will instead hold a discussion and memorial space in her honor.
The Student Government Association organized a vigil, set to take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in front of the library, providing students and friends with a chance to share memories, find comfort, and support one another during this difficult time.
To further support those affected by Birdsong’s passing, a GoFundMe has been created by Zoe Grummons to aid Birdsong’s partner, Delanie Dempsey, who was her closest family.
The fundraiser, which has raised nearly $13,000 of its $15,000 goal, aims to provide Dempsey with financial support, allowing her time to grieve without the added burden of expenses.
