Dr. Howard Hayashi, a beloved and respected surgeon who dedicated over 40 years to serving the Central Coast community, passed away over the weekend after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy as an exceptional surgeon, compassionate caregiver, and devoted friend will be remembered for years to come.
Sue Andersen, CEO/President of Dignity Health Central Coast Hospitals, expressed her admiration for Dr. Hayashi, stating, “He was beloved in our community and took care of thousands of our family members. His brother, Alan Hayashi, affirmed that Dr. Hayashi passed peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Alan emphasized that Howard’s dedication to family and community was evident in every aspect of his life.
As a founding physician of the Coastal Surgical Institute, Dr. Hayashi’s dedication shone through in his interactions with both staff and patients. Longtime colleague Nancy Steffora recalled meeting him in 1998 and how his kindness and generosity left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
She shared stories of his boundless compassion, such as making house calls and providing comfort during difficult times, including gifting her daughter a stuffed animal to ease her fears. Dr. Hayashi was well-known for his warmth, often greeting colleagues and friends with his signature bear hug.
Sue Andersen reminisced, “Dr. Hayashi would give you a big bear hug.” His colleagues fondly recalled summer barbecues and holiday parties where he personally provided food and wine, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and celebration.
