Robert Sharkevich Sr. Obituary, Death – Tragic Loss of 66-Year-Old Firefighter Robert Sharkevich Sr., Volunteer with Wethersfield Fire Department, Killed While Fighting Brush Fire, Community Mourns, Investigations Underway.

A devastating loss has shaken the community as 66-year-old Robert Sharkevich Sr., a volunteer firefighter with the Wethersfield Fire Department, tragically passed away while fighting a large brush fire. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the state, with Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and emergency officials providing updates on the tragic event.

Sharkevich, a retired firefighter from the Hartford Fire Department, continued to serve his community through his volunteer work with Wethersfield. His selfless dedication to protecting others ultimately led to his untimely death, leaving behind a legacy of courage and service.

The fatal accident occurred when a firefighter utility task vehicle (UTV) rolled over during the operation, causing fatal injuries to Sharkevich. Three other firefighters from Wethersfield were also injured in the accident but were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the UTV was navigating a steep, rocky incline in the wooded area when it flipped over, resulting in Sharkevich’s tragic death. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers firefighters face every day, whether fighting structure fires or brush fires.

The community has come together to mourn the loss of Sharkevich, with condolences pouring in from across the state. Governor Lamont expressed his grief on social media, stating, “My heart breaks learning the news that a Wethersfield firefighter died in the line of duty… My prayers are with his family and colleagues at this devastating time.”

A procession of police and fire crews from across the state accompanied Sharkevich’s body from Berlin to the medical examiner’s office in Farmington, paying their respects to their fallen brother. In the coming days, Sharkevich’s body will be transferred from the medical examiner’s office to a funeral home, accompanied by another solemn procession.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the community remains in shock, grappling with the loss of a dedicated firefighter and public servant. Sharkevich’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the risks faced by firefighters every day, and the importance of supporting and honoring their selfless service.
