Monique Maes Obituary, Death – Tragic Hit-and-Run Incident in Santa Fe Claims Life of Beloved Mother and City Employee

A devastating hit-and-run incident occurred in Santa Fe on Tuesday, October 15, resulting in the tragic loss of Monique Maes, a 43-year-old mother and dedicated city employee. Maes was walking with her two children on Paseo de Nopal when they were struck by a vehicle. While her children sustained injuries, Maes succumbed to her wounds the following day.

Authorities have identified a suspect, Mario Mendez, 29, who is believed to have been driving the vehicle that collided with Maes and her children.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest, charging him with multiple offenses, including homicide by vehicle, child abuse, failure to provide information and render aid, and tampering with evidence.

The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information regarding Mendez’s whereabouts to contact them at 505-428-3720. Monique Maes was a cherished member of her family and a dedicated city employee, having worked for the City of Santa Fe since 2000.

The mayor has expressed heartfelt condolences to her family, particularly her children, and the city is providing counseling and support services to employees affected by her loss.
