Wayne David Obituary, Death: Tragic Incident Involving Firearm Claims Life of MPD Investigator

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has identified the man sought in connection with a tragic incident involving a firearm that discharged, resulting in the death of an investigator. The incident occurred on August 28 around 5:40 p.m.

Tyrell Lamonte Bailey, 27, is wanted by police after an event that unfolded in the 4500 block of Quarles Street NE. Officers from MPD’s Robbery Suppression Unit were canvassing the area when Bailey, who had exited a suspicious vehicle, was spotted.

Bailey reportedly fled when officers attempted to approach him, running towards southbound I-295 and jumping down from a retaining wall. He was observed placing a gun into a storm drain before escaping on a motorcycle.

Wayne David, an MPD investigator, was later involved in recovering the gun from the storm drain. During this process, the gun discharged accidentally, striking and killing David at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Bailey is described as being approximately 5’6″ tall and weighing around 180 pounds, with tattoos covering his arms. He is currently wanted on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm.

The MPD is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to Bailey’s arrest and conviction. Additionally, the FBI is offering $20,000, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is offering $10,000, and the United States Marshals Service is offering $10,000.

The total potential reward has increased to $60,000, up from the previous amount of $50,000. The MPD is urging anyone with information about Bailey’s whereabouts to come forward.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many mourning the loss of Wayne David. He was a dedicated investigator and a valued member of the MPD team.

The investigation is ongoing, and the MPD is working tirelessly to bring Bailey to justice. Anyone with information is urged to contact the MPD at (202) 727-9099 or the FBI at (202) 278-2000.

As the search for Bailey continues, the community is coming together to support the family of Wayne David. A fund has been set up to help cover funeral expenses and other related costs.
