A tragic incident occurred over the Labor Day weekend in Irondequoit, a suburb of Rochester, New York, where two young siblings and their parents were found dead in their burning home.
Authorities reported that firefighters discovered the bodies of the family in the basement of the residence after responding to a 911 call about a house fire on August 31, around 5:23 a.m.
The Irondequoit Police Department issued a statement on September 2, detailing the sequence of events. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they were met with multiple fires throughout the home.
They quickly extinguished the flames and conducted a search of the bedrooms for any occupants. However, it was in the basement that they made the harrowing discovery: the lifeless bodies of the entire family.
The victims were identified as 30-year-old Fraime Ubaldo, the father; 26-year-old Marangely Moreno-Santiago, the mother; and their two children, 4-year-old Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno and 2-year-old Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno.
Irondequoit Fire District Chief Shane Metcalfe confirmed that the family had been found together in the basement, and the authorities were immediately alerted.
Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters expressed his deep sorrow and shock at the scene that greeted first responders. “This was a horrific scene,” Peters said. “In almost 32 years doing this job, I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The chief emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the deaths were clearly homicides based on the condition of the bodies. Although the cause of death for each family member is known to investigators, Peters declined to disclose those details at the time.
