Freddy Moran Quilter obituary, death, a renowned author and quilt designer from Northern California, has passed away. Freddy was a force of nature, a vibrant whirlwind of talent, humor, and an unapologetic love for all things colorful.

She was a woman who left an indelible mark on the quilting world, and her friendship with the author began 30 years ago when they met through P&B Textiles. Freddy was shaking up the quilting world even then, questioning the old norms of precise piecing and muted fabrics that had long defined American quilts.

Freddy and the author quickly realized that they shared a mutual rejection of perfectionism in favor of artistic freedom. They laughed about their experience in a quilting class that didn’t align with their creative spirits.

Freddy became a local icon, renowned for her bold approach to quilting. Her philosophy was simple but revolutionary: “Red is a neutral.” She encouraged everyone who took her classes to embrace color fearlessly, to dive into their work without hesitation, and most importantly, to have fun.

Freddy’s love for color was infectious, and she had a unique way of liberating others from the constraints of traditional techniques. She believed that if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then why do it?

Beyond her quilting prowess, Freddy was a devoted mother of five grown sons and a proud grandmother to twelve. Family was at the heart of everything she did, which was just one more reason why the author adored her.

Despite having faced a challenging year, Freddy emerged stronger, back in her studio with the help of her maker friends. Seeing her shine, especially when she met a new quilter, was one of the author’s greatest joys.

Freddy had an extraordinary ability to light up a room and truly connect with everyone she talked to about quilts. Her latest collection, Making Faces, was recently displayed at Hello Stitch in Berkeley, with the other half at Bay Quilts.

Seeing her work lined up along a massive white wall, illuminated by sunlight streaming through skylights, was nothing short of magical. Freddy was uninhibited, a natural-born creative, and the author was thrilled that she felt up to the outing.

Freddy influenced generations of makers with her bold style and strong voice, and we’re all better for it. If you have any comments or memories to share, the author will be sure to pass them along to her. She knows Freddy would love to hear from you and is always amazed by the impact she’s had on so many in the world of color and fabric.
