Jessica Gutierrez, a cherished member of the Racine, WI community, passed away on August 5, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 34 years old. Born to Fulgencio and Silvia Figueroa, Jessica was raised in Waukegan, where she graduated from Waukegan High School in 2008.
Jessica dedicated her career to serving others as a School Psychologist, starting with the Waukegan School District before joining the Racine Unified District in 2015. She was known for her advocacy for bilingual students and those with disabilities. Her commitment to her students was evident in her tireless efforts to prioritize their well-being, often placing their needs above her own.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Jessica had a passion for movies, with an extensive knowledge of both classic films and contemporary releases. Her vibrant personality shone through in her love for singing and dancing. A life-changing experience for Jessica was the adoption of her dog, Xena, who inspired her to embrace outdoor activities such as hiking.
Jessica’s journey as a mother began when she gave birth to her son, Armando, at 29 weeks. She showed remarkable dedication during his two-month stay in the NICU, ensuring he received the best care possible. Despite her own diagnosis of cancer shortly after, Jessica faced her illness with unwavering courage, maintaining her humor and positivity throughout.
Jessica is survived by her husband, Hector; her son, Armando; her parents, Fulgencio and Silvia; her brother, Santiago; her sisters, Yaneth (Roberto) and Erika (Manny); her nieces and nephews; and her extended family. Her passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 10th at Holy Family Catholic Church in Waukegan, IL. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Friday, August 9th at McMurrough Funeral Chapel in Libertyville, IL. Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to support the family are appreciated.
